                        The Beginning...

Metal Detecting has always fascinated me. I like the idea of an object laying buried beneath the ground for years and years, waiting for someone to rescue it. I love and respect old things. I grew up on what used to be an Indian Reservation and spent much of my youth walking through the fields looking for "arrowheads". I still search for artifacts when time (and farming methods) allow. My interest in artifacts led me to become a member of the Upper White River Valley Archeological Society - which fueled my curiocity for more "old stuff".  Sometimes the search for stone projectiles turns up other goodies. For example my row-jumping "headhunting" buddy found a primitive metal axe that had been heated and refashioned into a hoe. (evidently, the owner had cleared his land of trees and needed a gardening tool) This same buddy of mine also found a cannonball from the War Of 1812. What other goodies are laying just beneath the surface, patiently waiting for someone to come along and reclaim it?
A few of my friends were avid treasure-seekers, so after picking their brains and doing some research on my own, I decided to give it a shot.  I am by no means an expert, but here's a solid piece of advice for the beginner - invest in a good detector.  A cheap detector will bring you nothing but heartbreak and frustration. Invest in a quality, used detector to see if this is really something you wish to pursue. Good detectors can be had for as little as a couple hundred dollars.
